The HOPE project is innovative in that it proposes a methodology and design principles to embed a Sustainable Economy (SE) approach at a formalised, institutional level, considering the minimum use of resources and materials as well as the option to further exploit those through an upcycling process after the end of each use.
The core idea of this project is to add new skills to a number of professionals (engineers, technicians etc) related to the building sector providing them with knowledge about the most recent available technologies and methods and shifting their competencies towards a novel and sustainable approach regarding the building construction (from design to implementation).
First of all, a research-knowledge hub is expected to identify and categorise associated research articles, case studies, and electronic library’s collection of all the necessary archives with regard to the specific topic. It will contain detailed items of applied research in the field of timber construction design principles, circular economy, sustainable development and material availability in different regions of Europe.
Secondly, two different job profiles will be created (for Engineers, and for technicians/foremen/constructors) with the aim to shift their orientation into novel practices and applications for modular houses. The third output of this project will be a practical and detailed technical guide for constructing a small building unit. This is expected to be the roadbook on how to follow specific steps toward completing a modular unit. It is anticipated to cover a number of different necessities resulting in an adjustable and versatile solution in the context of the size and the type of use which will finally lead to agile implementation.
Last but not least, two massive open online courses (MOOCs) for blended training in the field of sustainable design will be developed. One for engineers who will be specialised in Sustainable approach and smart use of materials for designing a modular house, and one for technicians/workers who will be specialised in techniques and methods for modular sustainable constructions. These online courses will be designed in order to help learners create a safe and positive online experience. They will be interactive containing reading, watching videos and doing activities. This project is expected to match public bodies, companies and the University's expectations with regard to learning process outcomes, considering short- and long-term sustainable planning, common business and academic language.
